Radiation Control Permits

Most companies or individuals who handle radioactive materials must be licensed or registered with the Division of Radiation Control. The Division is responsible for environmental monitoring and radon study, uranium mill tailings and low-level waste management, materials licensing and inspection, and x-ray registration and inspection programs.

Process Overview

Applicants for specific radioactive material licenses must complete an application form which includes sketches, drawings and other attachments, and submit it with the applicable fee. Instructions, called Regulatory Guides, are available. The Division needs enough information to determine if equipment, facilities, training, experience and radiation safety programs are adequate to protect health and minimize danger to life and property.

Applicants should retain a copy of the license application and supporting documents in the event the license needs future amendment or renewal. Licenses are issued by the Radiation Control Board's executive secretary.

Machine Registration

Owners of ionizing radiation-producing machines, not exempted from Utah Radiation Control Rules, must register with the executive secretary. Television receivers, radiation machines in transit or electronic equipment the produces radiation incidental to operation are exempt. Application forms are submitted to the executive secretary.

Fees

Time Required

Licenses generally take from a few weeks to three months to obtain, depending on complexity. Machine registration requires approximately two days after fees are submitted. Term: Licenses are valid for five years. Machines must be registered yearly.
