Pollution Prevention (P2)

Pollution Prevention (P2) is about reducing the amount of any hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant released into the environment in order to reduce the hazards to public health and the environment. Pollution Prevention is also about preserving resources through conservation.

Pollution Prevention occurs when raw materials, water, energy, and other resources are used more efficiently, when less harmful substances are substituted for hazardous ones, and when toxic substances are eliminated from the production process. By reducing the use and production of hazardous substances, and by operating more efficiently, we protect human health, strengthen our economic well-being, and preserve the environment.

At Work

We can eliminate or reduce hazardous and non-hazardous waste at the workplace. Pollution Prevention is a practical, proactive means of protecting human health and the environment that can be cost effective as well.

The Utah Department of Environmental Quality, through the EPA Pollution Prevention Incentives for States Program, has established a non-regulatory program to assist businesses and citizens with pollution prevention.
