DEQ Home > School Bus Retrofit Program
| September 2008 | March 2009 | April 2009 |
UDAQ has received the requested project funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (stimulus funds) to complete retrofits in remaining districts throughout the state. Preliminary work has already begun and bus installations will begin in June 2009. School districts in Box Elder, Carbon, Daggett, Duchesne, Emery, Grand, Juab, San Juan, Uintah, Morgan, North Sanpete North Summit, Ogden, Rich, South Summit, Tintic, Tooele, Wasatch, and Weber will be beneficiaries of these funds.
The request for proposal (RFP) for the Salt Lake City, Granite, Jordan, and Canyons schools districts is completed and a vendor has been selected. Retrofits on the buses will begin in the late summer or early fall of this year.
Installation of buses in Phase Two of the project, involving all of Utah County, will undergo retrofit installations in the next few weeks.
The numbers so far:
The retrofit project will be picking up speed and meeting a more aggressive schedule thanks to new money flowing into the project and a change in how the Salt Lake County money is being distributed.
UDAQ just received competitive grant funding from the EPA and is in line to receive stimulus funding to complete the remaining districts of Box Elder, Carbon, Daggett, Duchesne, Emery, Grand, Juab, San Juan, Uintah, Morgan, North Sanpete North Summit, Ogden, Rich, South Summit, Tintic, Tooele, Wasatch, and Weber.
UDAQ will be working with State purchasing to extend current contracts with both Cummins Rocky Mountain and Instrument Sales and Service to retrofit buses in the districts listed above. The vendors are currently working with these districts to gather fleet information so installation can begin when the money is available.
Instrument Sales and Service is expecting to have all of their contract buses completed this summer. Cummins Rocky Mountain, because they have a larger number of buses to finish, will complete their contract in early 2010.
The CMAQ funds for Salt Lake County are coming in one lump sum and will be available this spring. This is great news for Salt Lake City, Granite, Jordan, and the new Canyons school districts. Instead of waiting to be retrofitted while money comes in over a period of several years, all buses will be done at one time in the very near future. Once the funding has been approved, an RFP will go out for vendors and the project will kick off.
Phase One of the retrofit project is halfway completed. Buses in the Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Kane, Millard, Murray, Piute, Sevier, South Sanpete, Washington, and Wayne school districts have been undergoing installation since December and are expected to be finished in June.
Phase Two focusing on Utah County is underway as well. Cummins Rocky Mountain has been selected as the project vendor and the kick off meeting took place on March 3rd. A total of 360 buses will be retrofitted during the next few months of this phase.
The Utah Division of Air Quality has moved into the first phase of the Utah Clean School Bus Retrofit Project. The overall project will be broken down into phases which incorporate districts grouped into different geographic regions of the state. Depending on the level of funding available, phases may run concurrently.
Phase one, or the Southwest phase, involves the Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Kane, Millard, Piute, Sevier, Washington, and Wayne school districts. The request for proposal has been released and vendor selection is expected to take place in early October. Installation on the busses will begin in late December.
