Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Company: Four Pollution Prevention Projects

Pacific States Cast Iron Company implemented four pollution prevention projects resulting in the following benefits:

Meritorious Achievement Award:

Utah Transit Authority: Diesel Idling

UTA reduced idling of their diesel vehicles by 2.25 hours per vehicle per day resulting in reductions in air emissions from fuel burning and waste from engine maintenance. This also resulted in over $1 million savings in fuel, labor and maintenance costs.

Reduction is air pollutants are as follows:

ATK Aerospace Structure Division: Reducing Non-Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Waste and Increasing Recycling Material.

ATK's Pollution Prevention Team reviewed the company's recycling and purchasing processes and made changes that created reductions as follows:

La-Z-Boy: Continued improvement in Pollution Prevention

La-Z-Boy, last years recipient of the P2 Associations' Outstanding Achievement Award, continued to implement changes to meet their environmental goals which resulted in the following reductions:

Salt Lake County: Landfill Gas to Energy Project

The Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Management Facility (SLVSWMF) collects approximately 1,300 standard cubic feet/minute of landfill gas. Approximately 55% of this gas is methane, a green-house gas. By working with DTE Energy Biomass to collect the methane and convert it to electricity, this renewable methane gas is providing power needs for over 2,000 homes in Murray City.

Great Salt Lake Keeper: 2006 Jordan River Parkway Cleanup Campaign

From June through October 2006, the Great Salt Lakekeeper organized and directed an extensive cleanup campaign along the Jordan River Parkway. During this period 498 volunteers contributed 1,511 volunteer hours and collected 40,000 pounds of garbage and debris from 23 miles of the river (including 2,850 aluminum beverage cans and the Lakekeeper's 300th shopping cart!).
