Pollution Prevention is about the preventive measures we may take in our daily lives to stop pollution before it affects our environment. Here you will find several success stories from companies who won the 2008 P2 Award.

Swire Coca-Cola

Swire Coca-Cola was awarded the 2008 Meritorious Achievement Award in Pollution Prevention for their reductions in water use, greenhouse gas emissions, and solid waste.

Through the use of water conservation practices such as capturing and reusing water for secondary purposes, utilizing dry lubricants for conveyors, and substituting ionized air for water to rinse containers, Swire Coca-Cola reduced water usage by 17.2 million gallons. Focusing on the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), Swire Coca-Cola reduced approximately 1,700 tons of CO2 emissions annually. GHG reduction initiatives included a "no idle" fleet policy, purchases of hybrid automobiles, improved routing efficiencies, and the installation of speed governors. In addition, Swire Coca-Cola upgraded to energy-efficient T-5 or T-8 lighting in all offices, warehouses, and bottling facilities.

Swire Coca-Cola achieved an internal recycling rate of 85% in 2008 which amounts to a total of 1,300 tons of recycled material. Swire Coca-Cola is encouraging consumers to recycle both aluminum and plastic containers in their "give it back" campaign.

Hexcel Corporation

Hexcel Corporation was awarded the 2008 Meritorious Achievement Award in Pollution Prevention. Hexcel's pollution prevention projects focused on expanding their existing recycling program and reducing their energy use.

Hexcel expanded its recycling program by installing a new cardboard baler and covering an existing pad with a roof and walls to facilitate the management and storage of all recyclables. In addition, a recycling technician was hired and another forklift was allocated to the recycling program, resulting in 5.5 million pounds of material being recycled instead of being disposed of in the landfill. A cost savings of $386,000 was realized due to a reduction in waste transportation and disposal costs as well as recycling revenue.

Hexcel's energy efficiency projects related to the installation of new fiber lines, efficiency motors and fans, as well as HVAC and lighting systems. The projects were certified under the PacifiCorp FinAnswer DSM Program. The total savings for the projects is estimated to be 2.5 MM KWH/Yr.

Rio Tinto

Rio Tinto was awarded the 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award in Pollution Prevention for Continuous Improvement by completing a pilot project to reduce idling time, fuel use, particulate matter, and greenhouse gas emissions in fleet vehicles. The goals of the project included:

  1. measuring idle time to establish a baseline;
  2. developing a vehicle operator education plan; and,
  3. measuring improvements and reductions in idle time.

A total of 18 light- and medium-duty vehicles and 10 large heavy mobile equipment vehicles were included in the pilot project. By the end of the pilot project, idling was reduced, on average, by 59% resulting in a reduction of 423 tons of CO2, 14,871 pounds of NOx, and 1.71 pounds of SO2.
