Program Proposes Rewarding Steps Taken
"Beyond Compliance" To Benefit Utah's Environment.

Representatives from industry, trade associations, environmental groups, and regulatory agencies have been working together to develop an environmental performance track-type program for Utah.

The proposed program, called CleanUtah!, encourages and rewards environmental performance that goes beyond compliance. A number
of other states and the National EPA have worked with stakeholders to develop and implement their own programs. Although each program is tailored to the unique needs and business climate of each area, all share a systematic approach
to managing environmental responsibilities and include steps to reduce and
prevent pollution. Many are finding that these voluntary programs benefit both
the environment and the industry's bottom line.

How We Approached It

We began with a large stakeholder meeting in July, 2001. From that group, a smaller workgroup was formed and members explored what others have done and what it would take to make a program viable in the state.
