Dugway Proving Ground
The U.S. Army’s Dugway Proving Ground is located on nearly 800,000 acres (roughly the size of Rhode Island) of the Great Salt Lake Desert southwest of Salt Lake City. It is surrounded on three sides by mountain ranges. It is a major range and testing facility and a primary chemical and biological defense testing center.
Envirocare of Utah, Inc.
Envirocare is a private, commercial business licensed to dispose of Class A low-level radioactive wastes (LLRW). They operate a landfill site at Clive, Utah, which accepts low-level radioactive wastes and mixed wastes.
MagCorp
The Magnesium Corporation operates a plant to produce magnesium in Tooele County north of Interstate Highway 80 near the west shore of the Great Salt Lake.
Safety Kleen Corporation
Safety Kleen provides industrial waste services to collect, process, recycle, and dispose of hazardous and industrial waste streams. They operate approximately 280 collection and processing locations in 45 states and seven Canadian provinces. Safety Kleen operates two facilities in Tooele County: one hazardous waste incinerator and one hazardous waste landfill.
Deseret Chemical Depot
The Deseret Chemical Depot operates the Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility. Under a congressional mandate as well as a chemical arms treaty with the former Soviet Union, this facility is charged with destruction of the U.S. chemical munitions stockpile. A five-incinerator complex operates to dispose of chemical agents used in rockets, land mines, mortars, artillery projectiles, cartridges, bombs, spray tanks, and ton containers.
Proposed Skull Valley high-level nuclear waste storage facility
A consortium of eight out-of-state nuclear utilities wants to build a high-level nuclear waste storage facility 45 miles southwest of Salt Lake City on the tribal reservation belonging to the Skull Valley Band of Goshutes.
