In 1994, the International Olympic Committee adopted "environment" as the third principle of Olympism, along with "sport" and "culture". By 1995, Salt Lake City was the first bid-city to have environmental considerations required as part of its overall evaluation to host any Olympic Games. After receiving the bid, the goal for the Games was clear: Leave a legacy of environmental improvement. In February 2002, Salt Lake hosted the most successful Olympic Games in history, and Utah staged the most environmentally friendly sporting event in the world.
